Breathing Meditation
Finally…a simple way to the calm mind
Breathing meditation is pure breathing and pure meditation. What do we mean by pure ...
Western meditation asks us to create visual images in your mind to create relaxation. Mediation from the East asks you to empty your mind, relax and ‘be’.
Breathing Meditation is a matter of:
- sitting quietly
- closing your eyes
- breathing
- observing your breath
By watching the breath, it naturally slows, deepens and relaxes. The mind becomes still and calm. You reach a state of mind where all stress is released and energy sky-rockets. Your breathing is then 'pure'.
Sounds too simple to be true, doesn’t it?
Well it is simple…in theory. What happens to most people is...
- you sit quietly
- you close your eyes
- you breathe
- you observe your breath, it slows …then
- your mind goes crazy and chaotic with millions of thoughts.
Why?
As your breathing relaxes, even as it relaxes slightly. Your mind starts to release stress. It comes out as thoughts and even emotions. Your mind becomes active and you can observe:
- your shopping list
- how many meetings you have had, or will have
- work thoughts
- home thoughts
- all thoughts
And they all come at once, creating chaos.
Like a fitness program, it takes time and perseverance to slow and quiet your mind. Don’t chase the thoughts away. Let them happen, let them complete and just watch them.
Why?
Like the saying ‘a watched kettle never boils’, the same for breathing, watching your thoughts slows them down. Just like watching a movie, just sit and watch your thoughts happen. They will slow down in noise, volume and number. It may take a day, or a week, or sometimes longer.
Thoughts will slow …they will disappear. You will get gaps between your thoughts. The gaps get longer, longer and longer.
