Most of you believe the causes of adult stresses are different to the causes of teen stresses. This is not the case. Teenagers are stressed by the same stresses as adults. Why?
Life today is more complex and complicated for teenagers.
The causes of teenage stresses are just as complex as life itself. Teens have all the pressures of modern life, today you can also add global stresses as well.
Life today for teenagers is very different to when their parents were teenagers. Some of the many causes of teen stresses are as follows....
- Peer pressure ... this is greater today as commercial pressures are greater. Cell phones, computers, electronic games machines, clothes labels are changing all the time. To fit in, teenagers are expected to always have the latest gadget or clothing. There is still the age old peer pressure of fitting in with the crowd, that hasn't changed much. Now there is that added commercial peer pressure.
- Study and School ... Gone are the days you could leave school get a great job and climb the corporate ladder. Jobs now require greater academic achievement or you are less likely to climb the ranks of a company or corporation. Competition academically is great; the pressures of learning are higher as well.
- General Health ... yes, health affect stress. If your general health is poor, your ability to deal with stress is less. Health is getting worse for our youth, there are more infections, and fatigue related problems, learning difficulties, allergies to foods and other health or behavioral issues.
- Brain fatigue ... this is the one of the big causes of teen stresses. Teenagers today are constantly using their brain. Your brain is most active when you sleep ... this is a fact. When teens are awake they are either at school using their brain, or at home stimulating the brain through computers, television, DVD's etc.
Teenagers brains have little down time, time to just play with non-electronic items such as going for a walk, or just kicking a ball around. Brain fatigue is one of the biggest causes of teenage stresses and emotional health issues ... depressions, anxiety, suicides and stress in general are getting worse in our teens.
- Hormones ...the teenage years are when change happens most. Teens are learning at school, developing hormonally, learning how to fit in to life as a young adult. In the teenage years change is rapid ... quick change is the hardest on the body and mind.
- Diet ... food that teenagers digest today is not an ideal way to good health. Food is high in sugars especially, the give teenagers a quick fix of energy. This is not a good thing. With the quick fix blood sugars go high, what goes up must come down. As the blood sugars go down, so does energy levels. Energy does down, so does their ability to think clearly, be mentally balanced and stay awake in class.
Food for teenagers is a primary source of energy; sugars are okay if they are the slow release types. Fruit sugars are slow release, so fruit juices, pieces of fruit are ways to boost energy levels without having the sugar highs and lows. Having a piece of fruit during the day at school is classed as a brain food. It will help them stay alert, keep the brain functioning well. Keeping away from junk food, high sugar foods and other substances is not easy for teenagers. All the companies selling these products market them at teenagers. It is therefore a constant battle to keep these foods at a low level. If teenagers are healthy, full of energy and stresses are low, then foods no matter what their sugar content will not be a large issue. They are still never an ideal food, but they will tolerate and process them better if they are healthy.
What should You Do?
The causes of teen stresses are numerous, these are just some of the many issues they face on a day to day basis. Learning to cope and deal with stress is essential for our youth. Removing the causes of teenage stress needs to be simple. Why?
Teenagers do not want to work hard. This is stereotypical, but our youth still use their body correctly. Life is supposed to be fun, easy and simple. Teenagers will only do activities that fit this picture.
