Guided Meditation
The lazy way to meditate ... or is it?
Is guided meditation a lazy way to meditate? After all aren't you just sitting and listening to a tape or CD?
Shouldn't meditation require active participation? In actual fact there are many types of meditation. Passively listening to a CD or tape, being guided through the process is a good way to learn to meditate.
Guided meditation is actually the easiest and best way to learn to meditate. You sit, relax and listen. The meditation guides you through techniques to help you physically relax, then mentally relax and finally quiet and calm your mind.
There are many forms of guided mediation, many use visualization techniques. These help you to create pictures or movies in your head while meditating.
These visualization techniques help you to relax physically and mentally.
There is a problem though …
If you can not visualize easily, these can leave you feeling unsettled. You may be asked to picture a beach scene, a river or park. All you can see is darkness or some fleeting image.
Then there is the problem of the person’s voice. Do they sound boring, irritating or annoying? Certain voices help you to relax and others can have the opposite effect.
So …
What is the best Guided Meditation?
... most of all ... is it right for you?
The meditation guides I have found best, and for millions of others also, is the
Silva Method.
Jose Silva, known as the father of modern meditation, developed a very simple guided meditation technique. You initially use a CD or tape to teach you to relax. First physically, then mentally.
Each time you use the CD, you are able to relax better and deeper. Once you master this, the next steps lead you through various visualization and guided meditation techniques.
Mastering the relaxation phase is simple and easy, as they use the technology of music and sound waves to help you relax. They also have alternative people leading you through, so if you prefer a male voice you have it, female then it is there also.
Once you use the process, you learn to use it by yourself. No CD, no music, just the technique.
You are able then to meditate anywhere and anytime. It only takes a few minutes, no hours of sitting meditating like other meditation techniques.
Does one size fit all?
... what other types of guided meditation is there ... the facts!
There are as many types of guided meditation as there are meditation techniques. All have the same overall goal ... to get you to relax physically and mentally.
Silva has the added goal of teaching you ways to improve your life, health, finances etc.
Most other guided meditations will just use different methods to guide you to a meditative state.
The dialogues range from … walking on a beach to … going down in an elevator. Different methods to help you to relax.
There are those from large companies selling meditation tapes … to mediation guides who teach classes … to tapes from ‘new age’ sources.
My advice is trying a few and see which you like and then use it regularly. I personally and professionally recommend the
Silva Method.
Why?
It works for me. So I think it is good. For you, choose which is best for you. After all, you want to meditate and have the many benefits meditation brings. So you need the best technique for you to achieve this.
Guided meditation is an easy way to learn to meditate. Meditating should be easy, fun and simple, after all.

Confused yet? Guided meditation is good, don't get me wrong. What I have found best is to combine a few techniques together to form a "super-meditation" technique. Nothing fancy or complicated. Just the best and simplest way to gain all the benefits from meditating.
