Meditation Position

Are you meditating correctly? Should you lie or sit? This is essential to get right ...

Meditation position ... sit, stand or lie down? Who do you believe and which is best or the correct way to meditate?

If you are in the 'wrong' position ... will the benefits disappear?

Isn't meditating supposed to be simple?

So which is best? While you are learning to meditate, the best meditation position is ... the one that is best for you.

Meditation is used to calm and quiet the mind. To create relaxation in your body and mind. To allow you to contemplate, seek answers, commune and many other reasons.

The position you start with initially will change. As you meditate more over time, you will discover many different ways of meditating. With this comes a change in your meditation position.

You will see in many ‘how to meditate’ books a variety of positions. Learning to mediate should be easy and simple. Choosing the right meditation position is determined by:

  • the type of meditation technique you use
  • your flexibility
  • your health and fitness status
  • where you meditate

If you already know how to meditate, and are already meditating regularly, you will have a favorite meditation position now. This is the best position for you … now.

Below are the more common positions to use when you are learning to meditate. They are used by meditation novices and by the Yogis and Mediation Masters. Choose a mediation position based on comfort and the ease it allows you to relax and meditate.

Lying Down

A lot of people are told ‘it is not best to lie down’ when you are learning to meditate. The reason is that as you relax, you may fall asleep.

Sleeping is not meditating. Although, if you use the brain entrainment meditation methods, you can still be asleep and the tapes still do their job.

If you are able to keep awake while you meditate, lying down is perfectly okay.

It is also a position that makes it easy to relax physically. It is also easy to visualize looking sky-ward when you are lying on your back.

So meditation lying down does have its’ advantages … as long as you can keep awake.

Sitting in a Chair

Sitting in a chair is the most common of meditation positions. Feet should be flat on the floor, your spine straight and hands resting in your lap.

The chair can be of any type, the kitchen chair is easiest as it tends to be firm and comfortable.

A couch or comfy chair is not ideal as you tend to slouch. This can affect your ability to relax effectively.

Many ‘experts’ on meditating believe the chair should be wooden. It is a natural substance and wood absorbs negative energy. Whether this is true or not, you can decide.

Make the chair comfortable, use cushions to support your spine if you need to. Do have your feet flat on the ground, no crossing your legs. Take off your shoes as it does feel better with your feet touching the ground.

Then just relax and meditate.

Lotus Position

If you are flexible and can sit in this position … well done. I can’t and I can’t see myself ever doing it either.

It is the traditional position of yoga and meditation. A lot of positions are said to be better, because they allow the flow of energy etc.

If you stop the flow of circulation, your legs will fall asleep, you will get pins and needles in your legs … so forget about energy flowing. It will be impossible to meditate if you are uncomfortable.

Mediation position is based on comfort. If you can sit cross legged ... great. If you can’t use another position.

If you want to use this position but aren’t flexible, sit in this position regularly without meditating. As your flexibility increases, then use it when you meditate. Start with just crossing your legs, as flexibility increases, place your feet in the lotus position ... feet in your lap.

Make sure you stretch before you do this, even if you practice it frequently. You don’t want to pull a muscle while meditating or getting cramp.

Kneeling

Called ‘seiza’, this meditation position sounds simple. It also can cut off circulation and nerve supply to your legs. This position consists of sitting on your heels with your toes or tops of your feet resting on the ground.

Children sit on their knees regularly and can do so for hours. Most adults are out of practice and this position can cause your legs to fall asleep.

Practice it first and see if your legs fall asleep. If they do, practice it without meditating until you are use to this position. Then use it while meditating.

You can place a pillow between your feet and buttocks to make it more comfortable. Or between your feet and the floor if this feels better.

There are kneeling chairs available, which place you in a kneeling position, just in a chair. They are comfortable and well padded and tend to allow you to use this position without your legs falling asleep.

So … what is best?

The best meditation position is the one you find most comfortable. As you are just learning to meditate, choose the position you find easiest to relax with.

A simple … how to meditate … approach would say; start sitting in a chair, then progress to the kneeling or lotus position. Lying down will also give you a different experience of meditating. It is a completely different position to the others, but use it once you can meditate regularly without falling asleep.

So…

The best position is the position that is best for you. Based on comfort, the ease of meditating and your ability to relax and calm your mind. Change your position as you see fit and remember to just enjoy your meditating practice.
