Meditation Techniques

You want to learn to meditate ... which way is best ... don't waste time ...read this first!

Most of you may have used meditation techniques you learnt from a book or class. You may have used them for a few weeks or months, only to find you struggled and eventually gave up meditating.

Learning how to meditate can be confusing, hard and sometimes impossible to understand. Most of the meditation techniques you will read about talk about dedication … hard work … focus … time (as in years of dedicated time) … arduous and laborious effort.

You may be told that meditating is a method to connect to the universe. You must suffer to achieve this, selling your possessions, making a pilgrimage or living in a cave.

This viewpoint is incorrect…

Meditation techniques are innate and inborn in you. You have an ability to slow and quiet your mind. You can unleash your potential to reduce stress, improve your health, stimulate creativity and gain all the desires you have. You did this when you were a child …

You healed faster, took on the world, had numerous setbacks yet still tried again and again … to walk and talk … to climb … sport … education … and many other tasks.

As a child your mind was less active and therefore more open to trying new things. To come up with great ideas, to have no stress and look at life from a positive and happy perspective.

Using meditation techniques can achieve this again, just from adult eyes.

Sounds great … so which meditation techniques are best to achieve this?

You need to find a technique that fits you. Why?

You probably have a job, with that comes pressure on your time, where you can meditate and which meditation techniques will work best. You may have a family and want to spend time with them, so time is precious. You need to work out the best methods that will last. Especially if you want to keep meditating for years to come.

After all, you want the benefits now, but the benefits in years to come are fantastic. Meditating long term brings … good health … high energy … low stress …. Increased longevity. All proven benefits of meditation.

So onto the meditation techniques …

Breathing Meditation Techniques

Conscious connected breathing … otherwise known as breathing meditation. This is one of the simplest and easiest meditation techniques.

Basically it involves sitting with your eyes closed relaxing and watching your breath. As you breathe in and out you just observe the motion of your breathing. Your breath slows and becomes quiet.

To help the process you can count your breaths. Multiples of nine are suggested from an Eastern view. The reason is nine is the end of a cycle and the start of a new cycle. So breathing deepens, relaxes and completes as you count to nine.

Count to 9 and repeat again 1-9. Or count in multiples of 9 … 18, 27, 36 etc. Counting to 9 and then repeating a count of 1 to 9 is easier to keep the focus on counting. It helps to prevent your mind wandering away from your focused breathing.

As your breath deepens, you will notice you focus on the counting and not your breathing. Once this occurs, you can switch to a ‘mantra’ and stop the counting.

Mantras are only a focus word or saying. They are not religious. A common Eastern mantra is 'om', meaning god. Western mantras work well such as … calm … relax … peace etc.

All you do is say the mantra over and over for a few minutes or longer to keep a single solitary focus. As you focus on the mantra your mind quiets further and you can complete the meditation by just stopping the mantra. Just sit in the quietness and calm of your mind. This is breathing meditation. Guided Meditation Techniques

Guided meditation techniques require you to listen to someone guiding you through a meditation script. Music or various sounds are played to help you relax. The mind relaxes as you are guided through a meditative journey.

You are asked to visualize a peaceful setting, see light washing over your body or other methods to help you relax.

Once you pass through the physical and mental relaxation areas of the guided meditation, you are able to reach deeper levels of mind.

At these levels you are guided to create whatever you desire. From improving your creativity, gaining health, losing weight, increasing job performance or any other desire you have.

The skills learnt are easily applied by you, to create the life you want.

At these advanced levels, the need for music or guided meditation tapes/CD’s disappears. You are able to reach these levels by yourself in a matter of a few minutes.

Meditation techniques developed by Jose Silva, known to be the father of modern meditation, train your mind to relax and unleash its’ full potential. Jose developed simple guided meditation CD’s to open up your mind and allow all the benefits of meditation quickly. To learn more on his fantastic program click here.

Brainwave Entrainment

This is the new era of meditation. Through the studies of brain patterns associated with deep meditation, new meditation techniques have developed.

Scientists have studied and measured the brain waves of Yogis during meditation. They found they can activate various levels of the mind, each having their own benefits.

Through these studies, science has been able to identify and through technology stimulate the various levels of mind. This allows the average person to use the same mind levels as the Yogis do while meditating.

Advancement came when they used sound waves to induce the brain wave states of meditation. The benefits of years of meditating could now be achieved almost as soon as you start to listen to the ‘meditation sound waves’.

This method is probably the easiest of the meditation techniques. The reason is simple; all you need to do is strap on a pair of headphones and listen to a CD. The sound waves place you into the mind states of meditation. You are able to listen to CD’s dedicated to certain levels of mind and enhance it further adding affirmations or visualizations that can also be recorded.

Centerpoint is the leading authority on this technology and has an amazing range of CD’s and tapes on developing meditation benefits for you.

It should be noted though; the sound waves create the meditation states of mind. This allows the many benefits of meditation to occur. However, you still need to learn to calm and quiet the mind. This can only be achieved through the traditional or guided meditation techniques.

Stresses of a numerous variety help to create your chaotic and over-worked mind. You need to calm and quiet the mind to prevent these stresses causing long term health problems … physical and mental. Meditation is an ideal way to achieve this.

Transcendental Meditation Techniques

Transcendental meditation (TM) fits more into the more traditional views on meditating. It requires the regular use of morning and night meditation techniques to attain the meditation levels required.

It is classed as more of an observational meditation. You observe your mind and what it does. You are trying to create the quiet state of mind and while in the quietness, just relax and observe your mind and the many visions and thoughts it creates.

TM is easily learned, it doesn’t require you to sit in strange positions. Sitting in the quiet state of TM, the mind settles down to its’ most silent level. As the mind settles, so does the body.

You are not guided to this level; there is no music, just the quietness.

Like all meditation techniques, TM creates the many benefits of meditation. TM just requires the more habitual practice of meditation, night and morning.

Chakra Meditation Techniques

In the body there are seven lakes of energy called Chakras. Each one relates to various physical, emotional and energy traits in the body.

From an Eastern view, the Chakras help our body to function well if they are open and working well. If Chakras become closed, poor health and an increase of stress occurs.

Chakra meditation techniques are used to open the Chakras, allowing them to function better.

You are able to activate these Chakras through meditation, visualization and Mudra. Mudra are hand positions (hand yoga) that help to increase the function of systems in your body and mind.

For a more in-depth knowledge of your Chakras and their function, click here.

Chakra meditation is a more specialized form of meditation. It is purely designed to open the Chakras. It takes time to practice as you are combining a few techniques to help open the Chakra. With practice it is very easy to open your Chakras and also notice when they are needing a little ‘tune-up’.

Chakra meditation techniques are not required as a daily practice. They can be used sporadically to help boost the Chakras and the benefits created by having them open.
