Positive Effects of Stress
Do your Positive Effects outweigh your Negative Effects?
... or is stress winning the battle
The positive effects of stress should outweigh the negative ... ideally. For most of you this is not happening.
Why?
Most of you are unaware of stress ... full stop. Whether it is the positive or negative effects. It is the day to day stress that is killing you ... yet you look at this stress as normal.
The positive effects you don't know if they exist ... or even if they actually are a benefit or not.
Yes, stress can be positive. The positive effects of stress can be as simple as keeping us alert or ready to avoid danger.
The positive effects of stress usually come from lower levels of stress. You are also better prepared for stress being positive if you are healthy. If your health levels are high, if you cope well with stress, then most stress creates positive effects rather than negative.
A positive effect of stress comes about as your body creates chemical changes in the brain and body. Small or moderate amounts of these chemicals will create positive feelings in the body. Large amounts create the overload which causes ill health.
So ... what are the positive effects of stress?
Stresses can create a release of adrenalin. Which gives you that little buzz. The stimulation, motivation and enthusiasm to enjoy certain tasks. This is commonly seen with deadline approaching.
The controlled adrenalin rush creates a positive enthusiastic and excited feeling of completing a task with minutes to spare.
If you are unhealthy, deal with stress poorly or leave work too late, this can cause extreme levels that are unhealthy.
Most of you leave tasks later than you should, from exams at school or college, assignments, projects or tasks at work. This positive effect of stress needs to be managed ... you want the excitement level but not the anxiety.
Stress creates energy; again the adrenal response causes a surge in energy levels. Energy you can use to get tasks done, work later and be wide awake. This is the enthusiasm that lasts and once a task is completed, creates that party atmosphere of a job well done.
Too much of this will lead to a drop in energy. What goes up must come down.
If energy levels from the stress response go too high then energy levels will crash eventually. Keeping energy levels high for long periods of time will create health issues.
If you are healthy, have a good approach to stress, time management etc, and then high energy can be manageable. The extreme highs and lows are therefore avoidable.
With controlled stress your perception levels increase. You become more attentive ... the energy high creates your senses to increase also.
You become more creative, less inhibited and more productive. In those excitement times, where energy is high ... your brain works at a higher level.
Great ideas, brilliant perceptions into a problem are common. You work at a higher production rate. This can spill into other areas, where you become more attentive to your home life, get better grades in exams, life seems brighter in general.
Too much stress and an overload will happen. Your creative ways become bizarre or totally outlandish. You work too hard or lose focus, and lose attention with your families and working environment.
One positive effect of stress is ... knowledge or wisdom.
Facing your stresses, solving problems in your past gives you skills to adapt and cope in the future.
Stresses that you learn from create a positive change for the future. You handle life better and tend to become more pro-active with stress, rather than reactive.
A final benefit of stress is the warning signal.
Anxiety is a useful warning signal. Your body will prepare for danger and release chemicals to protect you or help you recover. Research has shown patients having surgery recover faster after an operation if they have mild anxiety prior to surgery.
If you are traumatized, then levels become too high and recovery is slower. The same occurs if you bury the worries or suppress the anxiety.
Dealing with stress in a positive manner helps you survive, recover and perform well.
The positive effects of stress only happen if the levels of stress are manageable. Being healthy,
learning to deal with stress
and having good energy levels is the best way to create all the … positive effects of stress.
